How Important Is It To Get The Right Size Of Heating And Cooling Equipment?

If you’re in the market for a new central heating and air conditioning system to help reduce energy costs, you need to understand how important it is to properly size your system. Correct HVAC sizing will improve indoor comfort and reduce costs and usage in addition to maintenance.

Because older homes were not constructed with the same air tightness as they are today, it was common to install HVAC equipment with capacity of two to four times beyond what was necessary. Yet even older houses are more air tight as homeowners have added energy-efficient windows, weather-stripping and insulation to their homes. Improvements like these help reduce heat loss in winter while and minimized heat gain in the summer.

Thus, the most common mistake today is buying a system that is too big. HVAC equipment that is too large creates large, uncomfortable temperature swings. Air conditioners don’t run long enough and cannot dehumidify the air, raising the potential for unhealthy mold growth. An oversized HVAC system will also short cycle, or start and stop frequently, resulting in more wear and tear of the equipment, leading to premature failure.

Don’t purchase HVAC equipment simply on the label that lists the BTUs of the unit,or based on a “rule of thumb” used by an HVAC contractor. These are both incorrect ways to select HVAC units. The proper way to perform HVAC sizing is through Manual J and Manual D load calculations developed by the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA). Manual J calculations look at factors such as the climate where your home is located, size, shape and orientation, number of windows and their location, number of occupants, types of home appliances and much more. Manual D calculations determine the number of ducts used in an installation.

Your home’s load, or heating and cooling requirements, are affected by all of the above factors. Make sure your contractor also assess you building’s air leakage rate and inspects seals, joints and insulation on your duct system.

When buying a new system, make sure you receive a written calculation on the sizing of the system and a contract that lists the main points of installation that includes Manual J and Manual D results, along with a written warranty detailing equipment and workmanship.

Surge Protectors And HVAC: What You Need To Know

Any device that uses a computer circuit board is vulnerable to a power surge. This includes telephones, TV sets, personal computers and even your home’s HVAC system. A power surge can occur due to a lightning strike or a malfunction in the main power grid. A large power surge can cause irreparable damage to these items and any other electronic components in your home. Installing HVAC surge protectors is an affordable and effective way to protect all your electronic devices, including your heating and cooling equipment.

There was a time when heating and cooling systems were largely mechanical with only a few electronic components. Advancements in HVAC technology changed all that with highly efficient systems run by purpose built computers.

A power surge can cause a little damage or a lot of damage and there is no way of predicting the outcome when one affects your home’s electrical system. Even a small power surge can damage a HVAC unit’s components requiring the attention of a trained HVAC technician to make repairs. A large surge can cause the unit to fail completely and in some cases, purchasing a replacement is the only option.

Even if your heating and cooling system seems to be in proper working condition following a power surge, it is possible that some components have hidden damage. This will interfere with the system’s performance and may eventually cause premature failure and the need for replacement.

There is nothing you, or anybody else, can do to prevent a power surge from hitting your home’s electrical system at any time. What you can do is install surge protectors to prevent that excess power from ruining the electronic devices in your home, including your HVAC system. Consumers can purchase individual surge protectors for each electrical outlet serving an electronic device and a whole-home surge protector for the main breaker box to prevent a surge from affecting any items running off the main power line.

Adding surge protection to your home is an easy and affordable way to eliminate damage caused by an unexpected power fluctuation.

What Is A Smart Thermostat, Anyway?

If your goal is to reduce your energy costs by being kinder to the earth, then you might want to consider having a smart thermostat installed. Smart thermostats are wireless digital thermostats that enable you to better control the temperature throughout your home (or business) while using less energy than traditional thermostats.

How do smart thermostats work?

Smart thermostats work by measuring the temperature in each room and resetting itself accordingly. For instance, if you spend a majority of your time in the living room of your home and 6 other rooms are unoccupied for a majority of the day, then the thermostat will adjust itself so energy isn’t wasted heating and cooling rooms that aren’t in use.

How can a smart thermostat benefit me?

There are many ways that a smart thermostat can benefit you. One way is that such a technologically-advanced thermostat will use less energy but provide the same comfort. You will more or less have complete control over your energy bills, which will be based on the average temperature that you prefer for each room in your home. Another way that a smart thermostat can benefit you is that the thermostat has the ability to “learn.” In other words, the smart thermostat will adjust itself according to the settings that you normally use.

In addition, a smart thermostat can control up to 8 separate rooms of your home, customizing the temperature for each area. This will provide you with consistent and optimal cooling and heating, which will ensure your overall comfort levels. Since the thermostat can be controlled via the internet, you can control the temperature in your home even when you’re not home. This can prevent you from wasting energy when it is not needed, and you will definitely see the difference in your energy bills.

Obviously smart thermostats can improve your life in a number of ways. Not only can they help you to drastically reduce your heating and cooling costs, but they can also make controlling the temperature in your home a lot more convenient. Follow us for more great articles on heating, air conditioning and home needs.

Tips For Preventing Carbon Monoxide Poisoning In Your Home

Carbon monoxide is a gas produced by burning any type of fuel. If humans inhale too much of this gas, it replaces oxygen molecules in the bloodstream and causes poisoning, which can be deadly. You should take the steps necessary to prevent the threat of carbon monoxide poisoning in your home.

Many appliances in the home, including fireplaces, space heaters, wood-burning stoves, water heaters and gas central heaters, are sources of carbon monoxide. If the area where the appliance is in use has poor ventilation or the appliance leaks, carbon monoxide can escape into the atmosphere and pose a threat to the home’s occupants.

Common symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include, fatigue, headache, nausea, irregular breathing and dizziness. One sure sign these symptoms are related to excess carbon monoxide is if walking outdoors makes the individual feel better but going back inside triggers the symptoms.

Every level of the home should have at least one carbon monoxide alarm and one smoke alarm. Every alarm should meet the latest safety standards set forth by the Underwriters Laboratories. Set a reminder or choose a day of the year that is easy to remember to change the batteries in each detector.

Preventing Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Always open the flue before burning any fuel in a fireplace. Leave the flue open until the fire is completely out. Do not burn charcoal in a fireplace or attempt to use a barbecue grill indoors. It is a good idea to hire a professional to clean the chimney once a year.

Remain alert for signs of rust, corrosion or soot buildup on major appliances, vents and chimneys. Have a qualified technician perform an annual inspection to make sure there are no leaks.

[su_button url=”https://brodypennell.com/services/maintenance-agreements/” background=”#f66f16″ center=”yes”]SEE OUR PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE AGREEMENTS[/su_button]

If you use a space heater, always use the proper fuel and keep the area well-ventilated to allow any fumes to escape. If you have a wood burning stove, verify that it complies with current EPA emissions limits and all local regulations. Never attempt to burn anything except wood in this type of stove.

Homeowners who take these precautions can keep their families safe from the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Home Cooling Myths You Need To Know

Americans are always looking for new and better ways to save up some energy with the viewpoint of minimizing their carbon footprints and saving money at the same time. What’s funny however is that this has led to some air conditioning myths developing around the way people ‘assume’ it is wisest to treat their ACs. Some of these actually contradict with how an AC actually works. Here we expose 3 commonly held misleading beliefs about AC use for you so you can know better about doing what’s best for your home, energy saving, and your AC!

1.Humidity in the room can be decreased by setting lower AC temperatures. This is not true.Although relative humidity and outdoor temperatures are factors in determining how much energy your AC will consume, temperature settings alone cannot alter humidity in the room. In some cases, you may find that it helps if you try out different AC modes on the remote such as ‘Dry mode’ with a higher temperature setting in order to reduce humidity within the room. In this way, your guests will be able to sweat less.

2.Your AC system only needs to be checked when there is a problem. This is not the most ideal attitude with regards to maintaining your air conditioner in a good state at all. The longer the internal problems are left on their own to regress while use of the machine continues, the heftier the bill of a repair visit from the mechanic will be at the end of this period. Routine maintenance is non-dispensable even if the AC seems to be working fine. A good cleaning of the AC filter alone, can increase efficiency by 5%.

3.Keep the AC turned on all day long, it’s OK; but don’t switch it on and off constantly. The truth could not be further from this. In fact, turning off the AC at regular intervals for a break means that when it actually is turned on, it will be more energy-efficient and waste less energy to provide you with the same cool temperatures!

Ideal Temperatures To Set Your Thermostat To

A digital thermostat that is set for energy savings during heating months of the season can really save you a lot of money. Resetting your thermostat when you are away or asleep can be a good way of saving on energy bills. A digital thermostat allows you to program heating or air conditioning according to a schedule that you want. The good news is, programmable thermostats can save and repeat multiple ideal thermostat settings that have been set for the day.

Basic Thermostat operations

During the cold months, you can achieve maximum energy efficiency by setting the thermostat at about 68° F and lowering it when you are asleep or away from home. Turning your thermostat back by 10° or 15° for a period of 8 hours can actually save you up to 15% of energy; so it’s something you may want to consider. The same can also apply during the hot summer months. You can lower the thermostat setting when you are at home and keep it warmer than normal when you are away.

A lot of people make the mistake of thinking that the furnace will work harder to heat the house back to a comfortable level when the thermostat has been set back. However, that is not true; in fact, if your house drops temperature below normal, the rate of loosing heat to the surrounding environment will be much lower. In other words, the lower the temperature in the interior, the lower the rate of heat loss.

How to Choose and Program a Programmable Thermostat

Programmable thermostats are basically digital or sometimes electromechanical. The programmable thermostat is the best option for day light savings but can be tough to program if you don’t have the knowhow. Before you program the thermostat, make sure you have considered the times when you go to sleep and when you wake up. If you want to sleep at a relatively cooler temperature, consider setting the thermostat back a few hours before you go to bed. If there is a time when the house is unoccupied for some hours, you can consider setting back the thermostat at this time. Follow our blog for more great HVAC information and tips.

How Is The Efficiency Of Heating And Cooling Equipment Measured?

People around the world are increasingly becoming aware of the need to reduce their energy consumption as a way of combating global warming. The best way to make a home energy-efficient is to install energy efficient appliances, especially heating and cooling systems. Unfortunately, many people do not know how these appliances are rated. Read on to learn about the efficiency ratings for HVAC equipment.

Energy Star Rating

This is the most reliable rating and also the most popular. It was formulated by the EPA. The rating is only given to HVAC equipment that meet the efficiency requirements set by the EPA based on: contribution made by the appliance to nationwide energy savings; the time it takes to recover the cost difference between the highly efficient equipment and its less efficient counterpart in the market; and the measured performance of the machine. By purchasing Energy Star-rated appliances, you can be assured of spending less on utility bills.

EER Rating

This is the energy efficiency ratio of the HVAC equipment. The rating gives consumers a good idea of the cooling capacity they can expect to get for every dollar they spend on energy bills. This rating is based on the temperatures recorded on the hottest day of the year.

SEER Rating

This is similar to EER rating, except for the fact that it takes into consideration the average cooling power provided by the HVAC equipment for every dollar spent on utility bills throughout the whole season. HVAC equipment with a rating of 16 are the most energy efficient, while those with a rating of 13 being the least energy efficient.

MERV Rating

MERV stands for minimum efficiency reporting value. This is a rating system for air filters in HVAC equipment. It is based on the idea that air filters with smaller holes are more efficient in trapping dust and contaminants. In this system, filters are rated on a scale of 1 to 16, with 1 being the lowest efficiency available and 16 being the highest.

HSPF Rating

HSPF is short for Heating Seasonal Performance Factor. This is a system of rating the efficiency of the heat pump’s heating efficiency. The HSPF rating scale ranges from 6.8 to 10. Consumers should get HVAC equipment with HSPF rating of 7.5 and above.

Getting the most energy efficient equipment can help you reduce your carbon footprint as well as save on utility bills. Follow Our Blog for More Great HVAC Information.

What Do UV Lights Really Do For Your Indoor Air Quality

Air quality cannot be taken for granted. We need to breathe in a large amount of air throughout the day. Our health will suffer if this is full of unwelcome particles. Viruses, fungi and bacteria may find their way into our lungs where they can wreak havoc. These microorganisms are everywhere in the environment. However, this fact should not discourage people from going outside. The interesting thing is that the Environmental Protection Agency or EPA says indoor air pollution is often worse than that of the outdoors. We must tackle the problem head and one of the most effective ways is to use UV lights.

According to studies, ultraviolet light is successful in eliminating most of the germs present in the area where it operates. It is able to break down the DNA or RNA of bacteria, viruses, mold, mildew, spores and fungi so that these can no longer harm people. This type of light can be created using specially designed UV lamps. These lamps are placed in strategic locations where the unwanted microorganisms are known to grow and multiply. These include the air ducts and evaporative coils of the HVAC system. It is an excellent way of ensuring that occupants breathe well and stay healthy.

Clean air is particularly valuable to those who are suffering from a respiratory disease or have a strong allergic reaction to certain airborne particles. For this reason, many hospitals, laboratories, public places, and food processing plants have begun to use UV lights as part of their HVAC systems. It is one of the best disinfection techniques as it does not add any chemicals into the air but instead simply clears it of harmful microbes. UV lights lower the incidents of asthma attacks, allergies, tuberculosis, and countless other diseases.

Closing the doors and windows, cleaning the premises regularly, and using air filters are good practices but they are not enough when it comes to airborne disease prevention. Germicidal UV lights have been proven in lab tests to lower microbial levels in the air after they have been installed in the HVAC system.

This is a class "A" team.. Alessandro A, Rafael B, Rosendo V and Brian G... The team was knowledgeable, punctual, professional and high performing. They worked as one unit and removed and installed a 3.5 ton system seamlessly. I would be remiss is I didn't mention the Crane Driver, he is amazing !!!.Alessandro took the time to address additional concerns that my tenant had and even returned to take care of the breaker that tripped. If you need a HVAC system replaced, I would not only use Brody Penell, but request this team!!!Thank you, TEAM A ( Alessandro, Rafael, Rosendo and Brian).

Our HVAC system was serviced by your technicians Leo H. and Tristen. We were texted to let us know they were on the way and arrived promptly. They were very pleasant, worked rapidly, cleanly and efficiently, and did a most thorough assessment of our system. They then told us in detail all that had been done to service our system and made some recommendations about additional service. It would be our pleasure to have them return to service our system in the future.

Terrific service, very thorough and professional. Steven Juanes was friendly, clear and meticulous in inspecting and servicing our heating/cooling units. He explained everything in great detail and advised us about further maintenance without pressuring us to get it done. We have a two mini-split units which can be really tricky to work on, but Steven was ultra-knowledgable and took extra time to work on the roof venting/connections. Look no further, this company always delivers excellent service!

Ashton, Field Supervisor, was great. We trusted his recommendations for a new heating system. He will personally come with the installers to make sure our home is taken care of and everything goes well.He also connected with us personally, so it was an enjoyable experience.Cesar CCesar was excellent. Cheerful, professional, clean, very skilled. He explained how to use our zone system properly. We didn’t know.He re-set things so the system won’t get too hot and we will be safe.Cesar tested everything to be sure it was working well.I give him high scores for customer service.Thank you for sending him right away when our system shut off.April 2024Cesar Corrales came for regular maintenance service. He returned to install a part in the condenser so it lasts longer. With him the first time was Freddy, then Maurice. They also did a good job. They are learning from Cesar.Cesar is extremely thorough, checking every aspect of the system. He and I’m doing a review Freddy even took the top off the condenser and cleaned it out with the vacuum, then hosed it. Amazing!Cesar is so knowledgeable and answers all my questions. He’s also very personable, kind, and has a sense of humor.Cesar is respectful and courteous. He goes out of his way to keep everything clean in the house.I highly recommend Cesar and the people who come with him to learn from him.

4.8.2024Marco Ayala (technician), Juan U. (apprentice) and their supervisor Ashton were courteous, patient and thorough. They reviewed the problems I have with my Carrier unit and explained why I needed it replaced. I was given the choice of 3 new models with price and labor for each. They offered to contact my HOA’s management company for the roof installation and will arrange a city inspection after the work is completed. I would not hesitate recommending Brody Pennell to family and friends.5.1.2024Update: Edgar Hernandez, an installation tech, came today to adjust the settings in my Honeywell wall panel and was as polite and knowledgeable as the previous techs. More good news: I wasn't certain if BP's electrical contractor(s) only dealt with large projects or they are also available for individual homeowner concerns. Edgar assured me I can call them for electrical work.Every time I phoned BP the automated answering system placed me on hold but someone always picked up my calls within 30 seconds. BP sent emails confirming appointments. The day of the appointments I received emails and texts with the full name and photo of the techs (which addresses security concerns for a single person living alone) and links to a map so I could track the progress of the techs with estimated arrival times.
