It is a relatively new HVAC technology to the Los Angeles area. But, more and more building owners are seeing the value in VRF technology.

VRF versus Rooftop Units for Commercial Buildings

For many years, rooftop units have been the gold standard for light commercial buildings. With effective cooling and affordable pricing, why should building owners look to something new? VRF systems are growing in popularity among building owners for three main reasons:

• Personal Comfort – Commercial buildings that use a rooftop unit for cooling are set to one temperature no matter how big or different spaces. That can lead to loss of productivity and worse: thermostat wars! With variable refrigerant flow, every space gets its own temperature sensor at setpoint, so everyone is comfortable. At last!
• Energy Efficiency – VRF systems are completely variable, so your HVAC will only use exactly enough energy to meet the comfort needs of your space. By comparison, rooftop units operate at maximum levels anytime cooling is required – no matter how much or how little. So, you can expect much lower energy bills when using variable refrigerant flow.
• Simple Installation – When a rooftop unit is installed, a crane is required to set it on top of the building. Then, large spaces above the ceiling (called a plenum) must be dedicated to the ductwork that delivers cool air to the space. By contrast, VRF systems can fit into an elevator, so an expensive crane rental is not required. And similar to a ductless system, only two small refrigerant pipes are required to keep spaces comfortable. That’s great news for owners that want higher ceilings. If you’re going for an exposed look, VRF is a great choice.

What is a VRF system?

A variable refrigerant flow system has a unique design. It is a multi-split system, which means that instead of all the components being in one box, it is separated into multiple pieces.

A VRF system will always include an outdoor unit along with two or more indoor units. The outdoor unit contains a variable-speed compressor, while the indoor units contain the coil that heats and cools individual spaces. Then, each space will have a temperature controller in order to allow someone to change the setpoint for the space.

By splitting the system into multiple pieces, each space gets the heating or cooling it needs. No more desk fans or space heaters. For once, everyone gets to be comfortable!

And, you benefit from energy savings too. The VRF system adjusts as your needs change. That means if you have more people in a room, the system will provide more cooling. If there’s no one in the room, the system won’t send as much cooling there. No need to remember to change the setpoint – a VRF system will do this automatically.
