Reducing Heating Costs In Winter

November has arrived and with it, colder temperatures. Many parts of the country have already experienced winter weather and snow. Now is the time to start thinking about ways to reduce energy cost in winter. There are several ways that homeowners and apartment dwellers can stay warm and still keep heating energy costs down.

Homeowners

The most amazing part of air conditioner is the chemical that converts air to water and water to air. The refrigeration cycle employed by the air conditioning system actually reverses the natural flow of heat. Generally heat flows from hot to cold, but the refrigeration cycle circulates heat from cold to hot. It sounds amazing but this is the secret behind the cooling of rooms. The excess heat is then transferred to the atmosphere. A refrigerant, which is generally a fluid with favorable thermodynamic properties, is used as a carrier for hotness and coldness inside the air conditioner. It is circulated through a system of coils all the while when the air conditioner is on. The cycle begins with applying high pressure on the refrigerant thus making it very hot and it closes with applying low pressure on the refrigerant making it cool the air.

A/C Maintenance That’s Important To Complete Before The End Of The Summer Season

During the winter months, the air conditioning system stays dormant as homeowners run their heating systems. Therefore, as the summer season winds down and the warm weather retreats, homeowners tend to use their air conditioners less and less, making it the perfect time for the end of summer air conditioning maintenance. An end of summer tune-up is essential for optimal system performance, and can benefit a homeowner in several ways:

During the end of summer A/C maintenance, it is important to focus on the air filters, evaporator coils and fins, the condensate pan and drain, and the condenser. In addition, both central and window units require some simple maintenance tasks to prepare them for winter and to ensure they are ready for the next summer.

Air Filters

Cleaning or replacing the A/C filters is the most essential maintenance task that will keep the system in good shape and improve its efficiency once the weather warms up again. Filters clean indoor air off pollutants before it enters the HVAC system, gets cooled or heated, and then flows out again.

Dirty or clogged filters obstruct normal airflow and kill an air conditioner’s efficiency. With normal airflow hampered, the air that bypasses the filter may carry dirt particles straight into the evaporator coil, thereby limiting its heat–absorbing ability. In addition, cleaning or replacing a clogged filter can lower the system’s energy consumption by 5% to 15%.

Evaporator Coils and Fins

Over their months of service, evaporator coils accumulate a lot of dirt, which obstructs airflow and insulates the evaporator coil, thus limiting its ability to absorb heat. To get around this problem, homeowners should inspect and clean their system’s evaporator coil before the end of summer. In addition, the aluminum fins can bend and obstruct the flow or air through the coil. Homeowners should therefore make use of a fin comb to comb the fins back into their former position.

Condensate Pan and Drain

A condensate pan and drain traps moisture from the cooling process and expels it outdoors. Before the end of summer, homeowners should inspect the pan and drain for moisture and get rid of any stagnant water to prevent freezing during the winter season.

Condenser

The condenser begins the cooling process by releasing heat outdoors. During the end of summer A/C maintenance, homeowners should check the condenser for any buildup of dirt on the coils and fins and carefully clean with a hose to get rid of any dirt or grime. It is also important to clear any overgrown shrubs from the area around the condenser to improve airflow.

When Are Minimum HVAC Efficiency Standards Going To Increase?

In 2009, efforts were made by the Department of Energy to increase the AFUE or annual fuel utilization efficiency for HVAC equipment. The push to increase minimum AFUE to 90 was based on the need to reduce energy consumption. While the change from a minimum 78 AFUE to a higher AFUE of 90 would definitely help decrease energy usage, the issue was complicated by the necessity of retrofitting homes to comply with the requirements of the higher HVAC efficiency standards for combustible heating systems.

The biggest problem with the new minimum AFUE standards is that only a condensing furnace would be capable of meeting the higher HVAC efficiency standards that were supposed to be implemented in 2013; however, with the need for homeowners to retrofit these systems and the associated costs and complications this would cause, the court has delayed implementation of these new efficiency standards.

A condensing furnace offers high efficiency, but it also requires special venting. For homeowners who would need to undergo extensive modifications in order to retrofit this type of furnace into their existing homes, the costs can be prohibitive. Even with the higher efficiency, condensing furnaces can cause a financial hardship for some homeowners. In order to understand how complicated installing one of these systems into an existing home can be, it is important to know how these condensing furnaces operate.

A condensing furnace burns fuel just like a traditional boiler or gas furnace; however, this is where the similarities end. While traditional combustible heating equipment loses efficiency by letting heat from hot water vapor escape up the chimney, a condensing furnace utilizes another separate heat exchanger to capture this heat. The vapor is trapped, condensed and the resulting heat that is released is used to help heat your home. The residual water is then drained out of the home.

The cost of implementing this type of system has led to a delay in implementation of the higher efficiency standards, but homeowners can still take advantage of high efficiency heating and cooling equipment. 4.8.2024Marco Ayala (technician), Juan U. (apprentice) and their supervisor Ashton were courteous, patient and thorough. They reviewed the problems I have with my Carrier unit and explained why I needed it replaced. I was given the choice of 3 new models with price and labor for each. They offered to contact my HOA’s management company for the roof installation and will arrange a city inspection after the work is completed. I would not hesitate recommending Brody Pennell to family and friends.5.1.2024Update: Edgar Hernandez, an installation tech, came today to adjust the settings in my Honeywell wall panel and was as polite and knowledgeable as the previous techs. More good news: I wasn't certain if BP's electrical contractor(s) only dealt with large projects or they are also available for individual homeowner concerns. Edgar assured me I can call them for electrical work.Every time I phoned BP the automated answering system placed me on hold but someone always picked up my calls within 30 seconds. BP sent emails confirming appointments. The day of the appointments I received emails and texts with the full name and photo of the techs (which addresses security concerns for a single person living alone) and links to a map so I could track the progress of the techs with estimated arrival times.

This is a class "A" team.. Alessandro A, Rafael B, Rosendo V and Brian G... The team was knowledgeable, punctual, professional and high performing. They worked as one unit and removed and installed a 3.5 ton system seamlessly. He explained everything in great detail and advised us about further maintenance without pressuring us to get it done. We have a two mini-split units which can be really tricky to work on, but Steven was ultra-knowledgable and took extra time to work on the roof venting/connections. They are learning from Cesar.Cesar is extremely thorough, checking every aspect of the system. He and I’m doing a review Freddy even took the top off the condenser and cleaned it out with the vacuum, then hosed it. Amazing!Cesar is so knowledgeable and answers all my questions. He’s also very personable, kind, and has a sense of humor.Cesar is respectful and courteous. He goes out of his way to keep everything clean in the house.I highly recommend Cesar and the people who come with him to learn from him.
