In our everyday life we use innumerable gizmos without even knowing how they actually work. It is not necessary for us to know it either. Air Conditioner is just another such wonder of science. If it is hot in the room, you just press the switch and there you get coolness. Apart from providing coolness, the air conditioner also helps decrease irritation aroused by sweating.
How does air conditioning work?
If you want to know how air conditioners work, then we have to talk a little science here. Technically speaking, air conditioners control room temperature by regulating the heat content in the air. If you know something about refrigeration process that goes on in refrigerators then you are already familiar with the cooling process employed by air conditioning systems as well. The only difference between air conditioners and refrigerators is the area that they cool, the latter obviously cooling a larger area.
The most amazing part of air conditioner is the chemical that converts air to water and water to air. Air conditioner typically consist of an evaporator, a compressor and a condenser, all of them being its necessary parts though they are configured in different ways depending on the type of air conditioners. Broadly, there are two types of air conditioners, first is split system air conditioner in which the evaporator is placed inside while the condenser is placed outside, and the second is package system used generally for centralized air conditioning over larger areas and all its components are placed outside the building.
The refrigeration cycle employed by the air conditioning system actually reverses the natural flow of heat. Generally heat flows from hot to cold, but the refrigeration cycle circulates heat from cold to hot. It sounds amazing but this is the secret behind the cooling of rooms. The excess heat is then transferred to the atmosphere. A refrigerant, which is generally a fluid with favorable thermodynamic properties, is used as a carrier for hotness and coldness inside the air conditioner. It is circulated through a system of coils all the while when the air conditioner is on. The cycle begins with applying high pressure on the refrigerant thus making it very hot and it closes with applying low pressure on the refrigerant making it cool the air.
