Common HVAC Noises to Be Aware Of

January 16, 2018

Whether it is a soft hum from the equipment or a whooshing air from the vents, it is normal for your HVAC system to create some noise. After all, it is comprised of various components working together to serve its function. Certain unnatural and disruptive sounds, however, may signify deeper or worse problems. It is important not to ignore them, as they might help you determine if you need repair or even an upgrade.

Here’s a look at some of these signs.

Common HVAC Noises and Their Meanings

The best way to prevent problems down the road is to work with a trusted HVAC contractor for timely inspections and tune-ups. That said, it pays to know which sounds are normal and which aren’t so you can take immediate steps to mend them. Take note of the following:

  • Clanking. HVAC systems in great condition usually produce a humming noise. But if it is clanking, this could imply serious issues. The blades, blower motor fan, or pipes might be loose or detached, causing them to rub or strain against each other. This can lead to major damage when left neglected or actual physical danger to your person. Switch off the unit at once and have an expert repair it as soon as possible.
  • Rattling. This could indicate a few problems. If the rattling noise comes from the outdoor equipment, there is external debris, such as a twig, stuck in the system. Even if the grate could keep large debris out, smaller ones can still pass through. Before removing the debris, turn your system off. If you notice signs of damage on the compressor, fan, or condenser, seek the help of a technician. Do the same if the rattling originates from an internal component, as removing the obstacle is a bit complex.
  • Hissing. This usually means air leakage. When the hissing is coming from the walls, your ducts might be damaged. This can increase your energy costs because instead of dispersing throughout your living space, the air is discharged into the walls.

Keep in mind that you should only call a technician to come over when your unit is making a loud hissing noise. If the hissing is light, this implies that your filter is not secured properly. You might also have the wrong filter size, forming a gap in the seal. This can be easily repaired by replacing the filter with a more appropriate one for its size, which would get rid of the sound.
