To get the best performance out of your HVAC, every part needs to work correctly, including the thermostat. Thermostats are the most important component for efficiency as they determine when and for how long your HVAC kicks on.

If you are looking for thermostat repair, give Brody Pennell Heating & Air Conditioning a call. Our eight decades of experience make us the go-to provider for all your HVAC needs in Los Angeles. We can get you set up with a new, energy-efficient, and advanced thermostat that optimizes HVAC performance and minimizes energy consumption.

How Do Thermostats Work?

Your thermostat is the “brain” of your HVAC system and controls heating and cooling cycles. Thermostats continually monitor the ambient temperature and kick on the heating or cooling when temperatures get too low or too high above the temperature settings.

Most modern thermostats have a digital thermistor that detects temperature changes by measuring changes in electrical resistance. Other thermostats have an infrared sensor that detects infrared radiation and converts that into a temperature measurement.

Modern thermostats connect using five specific wires. Two of them connect to the transformers for the heating and cooling systems, while the other three connect to the heating relay, cooling relay, and fan.

Signs You Have a Bad Thermostat

Below are some of the most common signs of a bad thermostat that our technicians encounter while on the job.

  • Warm air is coming out of your vents, regardless of thermostat settings
  • The thermostat displays incorrect temperatures
  • The air conditioner is constantly running
  • HVAC randomly shuts down without warning
  • The air conditioner or heater won’t turn on
  • HVAC cycles more than three times per hour
  • The display screen is blank or doesn’t respond to input

One of the most common thermostat repair issues we run into is broken temperature sensors. The metal thermistors modern thermostats use can become corroded and caked with dust, so the calibration is off and they can’t properly read temperatures.

Another common cause of thermostat problems is frayed or loose wiring. In some cases, your thermostat will lose power because it needs a battery replacement. Replacing the battery is simple, but we can help you with this if you’re not sure how to do it.

Smart Thermostat Options Available

Smart thermostats are a new technology that uses the power of machine learning and Wi-Fi to efficiently control your heating. With a smart thermostat, you program custom routines to heat and cool your house optimally and control your thermostat from wherever you are. Smart thermostats can also record and analyze past temperature data to fine-tune future performance for maximum efficiency! Contact us today to discuss options for smart thermostat repair and replacement.
