Leaving Los Angeles for the Holidays? 5 Tips for Keeping Your Home Safe While You’re Away

Though no one wants to imagine a burglary or other crime happening on their property while they are away, these types of things happen. If you plan on leaving your home to travel for the holidays, it’s important that you take some extra steps to secure your house before you leave. That way, you’ll have the peace of mind in knowing that your home is safe and undisturbed in your absence.

Here are a few tips for keeping your home safe during the holidays while you’re away:

1. Pause your mail delivery.

If you’re going to be gone more than just a couple of days, you may want to pause your mail delivery. There is no bigger sign that you and your family are away than mail piling up in your mailbox or packages left for several days on the porch. If a neighbor or friend is able to pick up your mail, that’s great. But if not, you may want to pause it while you are gone and resume delivery once you’ve returned.

2. Purchase a light switch timer.

You don’t want to leave your lights on the entire time you are gone. This is a waste of energy and money! Instead, purchase a light switch timer. This will turn your lights on and off on a programmed schedule. With the lights on, it will appear as if someone is home. But by using a timer, you don’t have to waste energy to benefit from this tactic.

3. Don’t mention your travel plans on social media.

One common mistake that homeowners make when leaving for an extended period of time is chatting about their travel plans on social media. When you make a post about the dates and times you will be gone from your home, this opens you up to a potentially harmful situation. Notify your friends and family members separately and privately rather than posting publicly on your social media.

4. Ask a friend to check in while you’re away.

If you have a neighbor, friend, or family member who will be home during the holidays, you may want to ask them to check in on your home while you’re gone. Whether they just drive by a few times during the week or actually enter your home to bring in the mail, water your plants, etc. – this can make a big difference in helping keep your home safe.

5. Adjust your thermostat before you leave.

You may be tempted to just turn off your heating and cooling system before you leave for the holidays. However, your HVAC system plays a vital role in keeping your home environment balanced, including humidity control. If you want to return to a home that’s comfortable instead of one that’s sticky or stale, then you should adjust your thermostat before you leave closer to the average temperature outside. This will help you save energy (and money) while still keeping your home climate balanced.

If you’re staying home this holiday season and experience an HVAC issue, don’t hesitate to give us a call: (310) 810-2721.

What do I do if my HVAC system breaks down over the holidays?

What do I do if my HVAC system breaks down over the holidays?

There is no convenient time for your HVAC system to break down. However, the holidays are a particularly difficult time to go without your heating and cooling system. Many homeowners spend the holidays in their home with friends and family and a breakdown could be disastrous, especially if you are hosting guests.

But have no fear! Our customers have gotten through holiday HVAC breakdowns and so will you! Below are just a few tips for what you should do when your HVAC system breaks down over the holiday season.

Troubleshooting Your HVAC System

It can be easy to panic when you notice the first sign of trouble with your HVAC system – especially if you’re planning on entertaining guests. But there’s no need to panic. Before you call us in to fix the issue, you can do some simple troubleshooting tasks on your own to try to determine the cause of the problem. It may be a simple fix that you can handle yourself!

Try these simple troubleshooting tasks before you call in the professionals:

  • Verify that your HVAC system has power and that the circuit breaker isn’t tripped.
  • Check to make sure that the thermostat has power and fresh batteries.
  • Switch the thermostat to “heat” and adjust the temperature by 3 to 5 degrees. Then, wait 30 seconds to see if the heat is coming out of the register. (Do the same for air conditioning but with the “cool” mode.)
  • Make sure that the fan on the thermostat is switched to on and that the air registers are open.

These are just a few simple tasks that you can do yourself to see if the HVAC repair issue is something simple. If you still cannot get your HVAC system to work then it’s time to call in the professionals. We DO NOT recommend trying to diagnose or fix your heating and cooling equipment beyond these simple troubleshooting measures unless you are a certified and trained HVAC technician yourself.

All I Want for Christmas is New HVAC Accessories

Now that the holidays are here, many homeowners have started thinking a little more about what they might ask Santa for in order to make their home a little more comfortable. Luckily, we know just what you need – HVAC accessories!

Though your HVAC system does a good job of keeping your home environment safe, healthy, and comfortable, sometimes you need a little extra help, depending on your home comfort needs and lifestyle. For example, families with allergy sufferers might need to go the extra mile to make sure their family members can breathe easy when allergies start to hit hard by purchasing an indoor air quality product.

Below, we’ll guide you through the world of HVAC accessories, so that you can make a more informed decision about which might be right for you:

Electronic Air Cleaners

Most standard air filters only trap about 7% of home pollutants like dust, dirt, tobacco smoke, mold, bacteria, and other allergens. This leaves 93% of these irritants traveling around your home left to damage your furnishings and aggravate allergies, asthma, and other breathing issues. Indoor air quality products like an air purifier or electronic air cleaner help remedy these issues.

Electronic air cleaners act as an extra line of defense against these pesky pollutants by cleaning the air in your home and removing these allergens before they impact your home comfort or health. Carrier’s patented  Captures and Kills™ technology traps and kills bacteria, viruses, mold, and other irritants, re-purifying the circulated air as many as 8 times an hour.

Who Needs an Air Purifier?

Though we can all stand to breathe air that’s a little cleaner, not every home needs an air purifier. This IAQ product is ideal for homes with family members who suffer from asthma, allergies, or other respiratory issues. It is also the perfect accessory for homes that have family members with weakened immune systems such as elderly folks or infants.

Smart Thermostats

Thermostats are a must-have for any homeowner. This device allows you to control the temperature of your living space, ensuring that the whole family is happy, healthy, and comfortable all year round. However, not all thermostats are created equal! While some homes have a simple electronic thermostat, other homeowners opt for a smarter option that gives them better control over their home comfort.

Smart thermostats provide enable you to reach optimal home comfort by giving you more control over the temperature and comfort settings within your home. With a Wi-Fi thermostat, you can adjust the temperature and other settings on your thermostat from any device with an Internet connection. That means you’ll no longer have to come home to a cold house on a chilly winter night or worry about leaving the AC blasting when you leave for work this summer.

Who Needs a Smart Thermostat?

Smart thermostats are the ideal HVAC accessory for homeowners who prioritize comfort and convenience above all else. They are also a great gift idea for families that are into the latest and greatest gadgets or want to work toward transitioning to smart home technology. If you’re in the market for a new smart thermostat, be sure to check out our selection of Carrier smart thermostats.

UV Sterilizers

Did you know that your indoor air is often dirtier than the air outside? (Yes, even in LA!) UV air sterilizers create a cleaner, healthier, and safer home environment by eliminating mold, bacteria, and germs from your home and the air circulating through your home. These devices are located in the duct work upstream of your HVAC system where they work to kill a high percentage of airborne bacteria and germs as they pass through the UV light.

A single UV lamp model kills up to 70% of the airborne bacteria that passes through your HVAC system. While the coil irradiation model kills up to 99.9% of surface mold on your central AC components and cooling coil. This not only creates a cleaner and healthier home environment for you and your family, but it also helps protect and improve the performance of your heating and cooling equipment.

Who Needs UV Sterilizers?

UV sterilizers are ideal for those who suffer from respiratory issues, allergies, and asthma. It can also be great for those who find themselves getting frequent cold and flu headaches, runny nose, itchy and watery eyes, sore throat, and fatigue.

What’s wrong with my furnace? 3 Top Signs That Your Furnace Needs Repair

Any time your furnace stops working, you may worry that an expensive repair or even a furnace replacement is required. Some homeowners will wait to call a heating and cooling service because they do not want to pay a large repair bill. But there are times that a small issue may be causing the problem, and the corresponding fix can be affordable and quick.

If you’re wondering whether you should call for furnace repair or just wait to see if the problem persists, consider the signs and symptoms you’ve observed and how severe they are. Here are some of the top signs your furnace may need a professional repair:

1. Slow Heating Of The Home

Even if your furnace is working in top condition, it can take time from when you first switch it on to feel the room warming up. If you stand in front of one of the vents and find that little to no heated air is coming through, there may be an issue with the ductwork instead of the furnace. Ducts can become clogged over time, and block the air from coming through.  Older homes may have ductwork that has worn down or was not installed properly that allows air to escape the system.

There are also furnace based issues that can make the home heat slowly. Issues with the furnace wiring can cause the unit to stop working, even after you’ve switched it on several times. If you notice that the unit is constantly restarting throughout the day, or that it stops working after just a few minutes, this can be a sign of a problem that an HVAC professional will need to handle. Replacing the wiring is a quick fix that a qualified HVAC technician can often resolve in just one visit.

2. Bad Smells

A furnace that is working optimally shouldn’t produce any smell along with the air. If you smell burning, gas or another kind of fuel, or smoke, chances are there is an issue with the furnace.  There can be many causes for the smell, from a serious gas leak to dust caught in the unit. The only way to get to the bottom of the issue is to have a professional check the pilot light, burners and gas line to see if there is an issue with one of these key components.

3.  No Heat At All

If your HVAC unit is producing cool air, even when you set the thermostat to a high temperature, there is definitely an issue. It can be compressor, which heats the air, or the blower motor, which pumps the warm air into the ductwork. If you haven’t had seasonal HVAC maintenance done, chances are you may have missed one or more of the signs of this issue along the way.

If you suspect your furnace needs repair, call Brody Pennell Heating and Air Conditioning at (310) 810-2721. Our team can help you get your furnace back to working condition as fast as possible.

3 Fall Los Angeles Events You Won’t Want to Miss

The cool winds are starting to blow and leaves are taking on new tones, signaling that fall is upon us in California. If you’re looking for ways to get into the seasonal spirit, there are plenty of things to see and do near Los Angeles that will help you get in the mood to celebrate. Here are four of the best fall events that you don’t want to miss checking out this Fall:

Annual Fall Harvest Festival

Get into the seasonal mood with a trip to the pumpkin patch, where you can pick your own gourds to take home and carve or just have an extended photo shoot to share on social media. Going into its 21st year of celebrating the season, Underwood Family Farms in Moorpark is a popular choice with locals, thanks to the extensive schedule of activities throughout the month.

In addition to tractor rides and a corn maze, there’s often live music and a selection of food vendors serving up old-fashioned favorites like kettle corn and shaved ice. Open from 9 to 6 every day of the week through October, the festival is also budget-friendly, with prices ranging from $5-20 depending on the date.

Dark Harbor At The Queen Mary

If you prefer to celebrate fall with a healthy scare to get you in the seasonal mood, the Queen Mary provides an authentically scary experience. The iconic ship, that is now a floating hotel, has long been rumored to be teeming with ghosts of souls who perished there. In fact, it was named as one of the most haunted places in America.

With mazes with plenty of scary characters inside, live music, and haunted bars, it’s more intense (and fun!) than any horror movie you’ve ever seen. The Queen Mary is located at the port at Long Beach, and Dark Harbor runs until the start of November.

Learn All About Insects At The Natural History Museum

Always an interesting place to visit with tons of interesting information, the Natural History Museum is a must-see for insect lovers this fall, as two of the most complex insects take center stage. Visit the spider pavilion to learn more about our eight-legged friends and see species from all around the world, running now until Nov. 25. While you’re there, you can also visit the newly revamped Dinosaur Exhibit, a world leader in information about the Prehistoric age.

To learn more about the museum’s exhibits, plan your visit, or buy tickets, visit: https://nhm.org/site/.

Oktoberfest

If you want to celebrate in the classic German style, you’re in luck. There are multiple Oktoberfest celebrations in the LA area this year. With some running until the first weekend of November, there’s plenty of time to get your Lederhosen out. In addition to the Downtown LA Oktoberfest, you can travel up to Big Bear to celebrate along the lake, jet over to Burbank, or hit the longest running Oktoberfest in Alpine Village.

Stay Comfortable All Season Long with these Fall HVAC Maintenance Tips

Fall can bring unexpected temperatures, with some days rivaling the heat of summer and cool nights that sneak up on you. To stay comfortable during this changing season, it’s important to have a HVAC unit that responds to your commands and works quickly to get your space to the desired temperature.

Maintaining your unit and being sure that all of the inside components work properly is vital during this season, as increased use over the summer is likely to have worn certain parts of the unit down. Below, we will provide some tips to help you keep your unit well-maintained all season long.

1. Monitor energy usage.

If you’ve been using your HVAC system a lot in the summer months, you may have seen your utility bills increase. As the average outdoor temperature drops and you start to use the system less, you should see a decrease in the amount of power your unit is using.

If your utility bills remain high even though you haven’t been using the unit very much, this can be a sign that there is something wrong with the unit, causing it to work more than it should. When this happens, it can point to an issue with the unit itself or a possible tear in the ductwork that carries the cooled air around the home. Keeping an eye on your energy usage will help you better understand when maintenance and repairs are needed.

2. Check for animal visitors.

As the temperature drops, small animals may try to find a warm place to pass the time. They might make their way into the compressor, the outer portion that powers the HVAC system or into the vents and ducts that work with the HVAC system. With sharp teeth and claws, squirrels, raccoons, chipmunks, mice, and rats can cause damage to wiring and other vital parts of the HVAC system.

If you hear sounds coming from your attic, check to see if an animal visitor has made themselves a nest. If you find any signs of animals there, access the damage and take the necessary steps to make any necessary repairs. Keep an eye on these areas periodically to avoid any future damage.

3. Change filters to reduce allergens in the indoor air.

Your HVAC system’s filters work to remove dust, dirt, pollutants, and other particles out of the air supply before it is funneled through the home. Increased pollen and dust in the outdoor air as the seasons change can clog the filters. Without a clean filter, the unit won’t be able to stop any allergens in the air from re-circulating, which can cause allergies and asthma to flare up.

Check your filters at least once a month and change when you notice that they have become clogged or dirty. If you live in an area that’s experiencing lots of dust or high winds, you may need to check and change your filter more often to maintain a healthy indoor air quality.

4. Invest in a seasonal HVAC tune-up.

Having an expert inspect your system at the beginning of the season can save you a lot of headaches and expenses down the line. During a fall HVAC checkup, a technician will check all the major components for signs of rust, wear, or damage and alert you to any signs of possible issues with the system.

In addition to checking for repair needs, your technician will also replenish any fluids, make sure the parts are well lubricated, and check the condition of the wiring to avoid short circuits that can shut down the entire unit. This pre-emptive maintenance visit can save you time and money later by alerting you to issues before they become major breakdowns.

Ready to schedule your fall tune-up? We provide service all around the Los Angeles area. Call Brody Pennell Heating and Air Conditioning for expert help and affordable repairs: (310) 810-2721

How to Keep Your Furnace from Breaking Down

As one of the most important appliances in your home, your furnace plays a vital role in helping you stay comfortable. Replacing your furnace unexpectedly can cost thousands of dollars that you may not have available to spend at a moment’s notice. One of the biggest reasons to stay on top of your furnace’s condition is so you can be prepared for the eventual replacement of the unit and work it into your budget. Here are some of the ways to ensure that your furnace doesn’t break down at an inopportune time.

Have Regular Seasonal Checks Done

If your furnace works every time you turn the heat on, it may never have occurred to you to have scheduled a furnace maintenance visit. But waiting until the furnace breaks down to have an expert look is more expensive and inconvenient than keeping up with routine seasonal maintenance visits. If the furnace breaks down on the coldest day of the year, in the middle of the night, or when you have holiday guests over, you can end up scrambling to call someone for help.

Scheduling a regular fall HVAC tune-up can prevent this from happening, and also provide you with valuable information about the condition of your HVAC unit. During the visit, our HVAC technicians will not only clean and lubricate your system, but they will alert you to any repair needs or let you know if a certain part is worn or on its way out, helping you anticipate your future HVAC needs.

Keep An Eye Out For Symptoms

Even if you don’t have experience with HVAC units, there are obvious signs that a furnace is on its way to breaking down, including:

  • Loud sounds when the unit is running, like banging or whining sounds.
  • Burning or rotten smells when you run the HVAC system.
  • Lack of effective heating or cooling or the system taking a long time to get your home comfortable.

These can be early warning signs of a serious HVAC problem, so it’s vital to call for furnace repair as soon as you hear or see these symptoms. One of our experienced HVAC technicians can assess the severity of the problem and inform you about whether repair is possible or if you’ll need to replace the furnace in the near future.

Rely On An Expert For Help

Trying to troubleshoot the HVAC unit yourself can be a recipe for disaster. If you aren’t familiar with how to maintain an HVAC unit, you can end up creating issues with the components and causing the unit to shut down while trying to perform furnace maintenance.

With years of training, a qualified technician can easily spot elements that need replacing and major components that are likely to wear out soon. Replacing these elements before a problem occurs is one of the best ways to prevent larger issues from occurring with your furnace.

Quality Los Angeles Furnace Repair

If you need help keeping your furnace in top shape, call Brody Pennell Heating and Air Conditioning at (310) 810-2721. We provide regular furnace maintenance and seasonal HVAC tune-ups to help keep your home comfortable.

How Do HVAC Rebates Work?

You may be wondering how exactly HVAC rebates work. A rebate is a cashback offer that you are entitled to after purchasing a certain HVAC unit. Rebates might be offered by a manufacturer as an incentive to buy their brand, or they may be offered by the government or a utility company to incentivize you to buy a more energy efficient unit. Rebates are subject to certain terms and conditions, so it’s important to get more information about certain HVAC rebates to understand which rebates you are eligible for.

Los Angeles HVAC Rebates

Right now, Brody Pennell is helping our customers save big with two special rebates that are currently available for Los Angeles homeowners who purchase a new HVAC unit:

  • The Carrier Cool Cash rebate is available until November with the eligible purchase of a Carrier unit. These rebates can save you up to $1,650 depending on the unit you buy. Carrier HVAC rebates are easy to submit online, so you can get the cash back as fast as possible.
  • The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is also offering rebates for LADWP customers that help offset some of the costs of keeping their AC units in top shape. We have interest free options to allow you enough time to pay for the unit without paying a ton of interest or fees, only the purchase price of the unit. If you’re ready to get a high-quality HVAC unit at a low price, contact us today. We can inform you about all of the current HVAC system rebates and specials to help you save as much as possible.

Is an Energy Efficient HVAC System Worth It?

If you’re shopping for a new AC unit, one of the big questions you’ll have to answer is whether or not you want to purchase a high-efficiency unit. An energy efficient HVAC unit can be more expensive than a conventional unit, and you may wonder if the extra expense is worth it.

While you will get the satisfaction of knowing you are reducing your carbon footprint, going green can mean putting out more money up front in order to save in the long run. Energy efficiency can save you money, but it can take some time to see these returns in reduced utility costs. Below, we’ll cover the different considerations you’ll need to make when deciding if an energy efficient HVAC system is right for you.

How Do Energy Efficient HVAC Units Work?

High-efficiency units use the same general setup as traditional air conditioners, but they usually operate on a high-efficiency motor. This kind of motor takes less power to cool the air and release it into the home. An energy efficient unit like the Carrier Infinity system has a higher SEER rating, which means that it uses less energy than a conventional system to cool the same amount of air.

The average Carrier Infinity has a SEER rating between 16 and 21, making them ultra-efficient. This results in a lower utility bill because you pay the power company for the amount of wattage you use. In fact, switching to an energy efficient unit can save you up to fifty percent on your home heating and cooling costs because of the reduced power consumption.

Smart Controls Make It Easier to Stay Energy Efficient

One way to make sure you reduce your energy consumption as much as possible is to use a smart or programmable thermostat with your high-efficiency HVAC system. Smart controls for your HVAC system can help you stay on top of your utility usage at all times.

On a typical day, you may notice that it is too cold inside your home and make a mental note to turn it down, but get distracted or busy. Before you know it, hours have passed with the cold air blowing for no good reason. Smart controls allow you to change the temperature, even if you aren’t at home. So if you leave the house and forget to turn the thermostat up, and you’re going to be gone all day, you don’t have to worry about the HVAC running for no reason. You can simply adjust it through the website or app.  Or you can program the thermostat ahead of time to raise the temperature at home when you know no one will be home, like when you are at work and the kids are at school.

Energy-Efficient HVAC in Los Angeles

With smart controls in place and an efficient unit inside the home, you’ll start to see lower energy usage and costs on your bill.  Remember, even high-efficiency units require regular maintenance and care to keep working. But these systems are definitely worth it if you’re looking for ultimate home comfort and energy efficiency.

If you need expert help with your unit, call Brody Pennell Heating and Air Conditioning today at (310) 810-2721 to schedule an appointment.

I found this company online when we had a furnace emergency. EVERYONE connected with this company had been professional, kind and efficient. They came out and showed me things about my furnace that TERRIFIED me. They will be back tomorrow to fix ever And I could not be happier. They are my go-to heating, AC and Electrical company from now on. AAA+++
Much appreciation to Ricky and Phil for the professional service today. Respectful heating and air conditioning technicians who will get the job done correctly. They shared some good advice to help keep my split unit running smoothly. I highly recommend purchase of a split wall unit through Brody Pennell as well as Ricky and Phil.
Thanks again.

Let me state, first, that it would be an injustice to limit my comments about the service we have received from Brody Pennell to what has been provided by Rosendo Valdez, and the two fellows of his installation crew on January 2nd. I have to add the initial contact we had with technician, Daniel, and his manager, Brett. Collectively, these five gentlemen were not only excellent representatives of the company, they were also great lightening rods for the practice of customer serve in general. In all cases, their professionalism was tempered with culture of care, comfort, and concern for what we needed and what the company could provide, all in an effort to close the gap between where we were when we initially contacted Brody Pennell and where we wished to be in addressing the issue with heating our home. The character of their work easily surpassed the goal of meeting the needs of our household, going hand in hand with meeting their responsibilities as company employees providing a product to the public.
Response from the owner:Thanks for the fantastic review! We're happy to have served you well.

The technical staff at Brody and Pennell are experienced, knowledgeable, and communicate very well. They will investigate and answer any questions without difficulty. They clean and inspect older HVAC equipment, recommend upgrades or replacements, and install new gear rapidly and in excellent condition. The cost is higher but the quality is worth it.

My technician was very thorough and professional. He was very detailed in his inspection of the equipment and in letting me know his assessment. It was very easy to communicate with him and he was not bothered with any of the questions I had. Even though the company gave a discount for the service, I feel it was a very through inspection.
